A FREE school meal is available to all children in Reception classes and Years 1 and 2, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.
Children in Years 3 to 6 still have to pay for lunch unless they are eligible for free school meals. The current cost of a primary school lunch is £13.75 per week (£2.75 per day).
Who is eligible for FSM?
From the start of the 2026 to 2027 academic year, all children from households in receipt of Universal Credit attending these schools will be entitled to receive a free meal.

Child Tax Credit (provided you're not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)

Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

Universal Credit - if you applied on or after 1 April 2018, your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you receive)
